February Meeting - Monday, February 20, 2012

(More information coming soon)

The Buchanan School District Bond Issue:

Disclaimer: When the Writers requested time to speak at our meeting, we agreed as an informational presentation. SCDC does not officially endorse the Buchanan School District bond issue -- it is a matter that each of our members will have to consider based on their own economic circumstances and the nature of flux in education as the Michigan legislature has now embraced unlimited charter schools and cyber schools. It is for the individual to decide the merits and needs of this bond issue.

Information on the forthcoming Buchanan Community School District Bond Issue from Representatives of the School Board

Guest Speakers: Wayne and Ruth Writer

From 1974 until 2008, Wayne Writer served Buchanan Community Schools in many capacities.  First as the Wayne and Ruth WriterCommunity Education and Recreation Director, he oversaw adult education and the many recreational programs for both youths and adults in Buchanan.  He then became an academic counselor in Buchanan High School and his final position with the school was as Buchanan High School’s assistant principal.  Mr. Writer served on the Buchanan Area Recreation Board for over thirty years and currently serves on the McCoy Creek Trail Committee.

Ruth Writer helped to educate all graduating Buchanan High School students from 1976 until her retirement in 2010.  Her emphasis in the social studies especially in the area of law related education prepared students to become active participatory citizens.  In addition to her work with Buchanan students she worked at the post-secondary level for several universities and colleges including Michigan State University, Western Michigan University and Indiana University.  She has been recognized at the local, state, and national level in the area of Canadian Studies.

With over eighty combined years in public education, Mr. and Mrs. Writer know the importance of education and the educational facilities needed for Buchanan students in the 21st century.

Work Party

Graphic for Work Party - young lady painted into cornerFrom Bev: Concerning our office and the labor necessary to get it up to snuff, some of us plan a "work party" for Saturday, Feb. 25th. I'll bring chili or potato soup, someone else said they would bring soup. We need bread & veggies and drinks. Bring you own soup bowl. Jess said he would get a list together of supplies needed and projects yet to be done. We can start at around 10, break for lunch and finish around 4 p.m. If you can't be there the whole time, come and work a couple hours. All help will be appreciated.

The office needs to be ready no later than May 5: The Michigan Democratic Party’s 2012 Delegate Selection Plan, which includes holding a presidential caucus on May 5, 2012. The MDP will hold caucuses at approximately 200 locations around the state on May 5th. District-level delegates and alternates will be elected at congressional district conventions on June 2, 2012 and statewide delegates and alternates elected at a State Central Committee meeting on June 23, 2012. The MDP’s decision to hold a caucus in May will provide Michigan with the largest delegation it has ever sent to a national convention – over 200 delegates and alternates.

State Convention - March 10 - Cobo Center

The Michigan Democratic Party Endorsement Convention will take place on March 10, 2012 at Cobo Center in Detroit. At this convention, we will endorse eight candidates for Education Boards and three candidates for Michigan Supreme Court - an unprecedented action that will give our Democratic candidates the opportunity to meet voters, travel throughout the state, and raise the money needed to defeat Republicans in November.

In order to vote at this convention, your MDP membership must be current as of Thursday, February 9, 2012. Please join the MDP or renew your membership today to ensure you receive your membership card in time for the convention.

Taking back control of the State Supreme Court means that Democrats will be able to reverse some of the most dangerous Republican policies coming out of Lansing, and we want to make sure our Democratic candidates have every possible advantage. I look forward to seeing all of you at the Endorsement Convention on March 10, 2012. We need Democrats from across the state to stand united to ensure Democratic victory in November.

Sincerely,

Mark Brewer,
Chair

P.S. If you have any questions about the status of your State Party membership, please email the MDP at membership@michigandems.com.

DNC Approves MDP 2012 Delegate Selection Plan

MDP Will Hold Presidential Caucus on May 5, 2012

LANSING – The Democratic National Committee has approved the Michigan Democratic Party’s 2012 Delegate Selection Plan, which includes holding a presidential caucus on May 5, 2012. Under the plan, Michigan Democrats will not be participating in the 2012 presidential primary election – a primary which is costing taxpayers $10 million.

“Under this plan, Michigan Democrats will not be participating in the presidential primary,” Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer said. “We call on the Michigan Republican Party to do the right thing and join with us to cancel this unnecessary primary, and save $10 million which can be used to fund vital services.”

“Both political parties should hold caucuses at their own expense and the state should use the $10 million to save hundreds of jobs of teachers, firefighters, and police officers,” added Brewer. “If Republicans truly care about being fiscally responsible, they will cancel the primary and save Michigan taxpayers $10 million.”
