Tell your U.S. Representative to co-sponsor the American Freedom Agenda Act

On October 15, 2007, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) introduced the American Freedom Agenda Act of 2007 (H.R. 3835).  This important piece of legislation would reverse many of the Constitutional abuses that have occurred over the past six years.

The American Freedom Agenda Act would bar the use of evidence obtained through torture; require that federal intelligence gathering is conducted in accordance with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA); create a mechanism for challenging presidential signing statements; repeal the Military Commissions Act, which, among other things, denies habeas corpus to certain detainees; prohibit kidnapping, detentions, and torture abroad; protect journalists who publish information received from the executive branch; and ensure that secret evidence is not used to designate individuals or organizations with a presence in the U.S. as foreign terrorists.

Please take a moment to encourage your U.S. representative to co-sponsor this legislation by filling out the information below.

A New Low for Wal-Mart: Telling Workers How to Vote

According to The Wall Street Journal, Wal-Mart is so intimidated by the very possibility of a unionized workforce that its supervisors have been holding mandatory meetings essentially telling employees to vote against Democrats and Sen. Barack Obama this November. Wal-Mart is taking this outrageous step because the Democrats and Sen. Obama have committed to pass the Employee Free Choice Act to restore workers’ freedom to form unions and bargain for fair wages, health care, decent working conditions and a real voice on the job.

All American workers have the right to freely decide whom to vote for independent of employer pressure and intimidation. Tell Wal-Mart to stop intimidating workers TODAY!

$217 Million Per Hour

As you may or may not know, I've taken a job with Health Care for America Now, an issue advocacy groups dedicated to winning real health care reform in 2009. Jerome has been kind enough to allow me to continue to post here on weekends on the topic of health care reform in America. Here's my pitch for the importance of this campaign.

$217 million per hour.

That's how much Americans spend on health care according to testimony in front of Congress' Joint Economic Committee by experts from the American Human Development Project.

24 hours a day. 365 days a year. For a total of almost $2 trillion spent every year, 16% of our GDP - more than any other nation on earth. And for what?

According to the World Health Organization, America ranks 37th in the world for best health care systems, behind countries we'd expect like France, Japan, and Norway, and also countries that might surprise you, like Colombia, Saudi Arabia, and Chile. And it's not just our health care. According to the American Human Development Project:

Despite the second-highest income in the world, despite being the the world's No. 1 economy, and despite spending $5.2 billion a day on healthcare -- more than any other nation -- America landed behind 11 other countries in overall human development [encompassing health, education, and income rankings].

One of the main problems was that one in six Americans don't have health insurance. That limitation is connected to such factors as lower life expectancy and higher infant mortality. The U.S. also has the highest percentage of children living in poverty of the 30 richest countries. The top 20% of income earners in the U.S. make 15 times more than the bottom 20%. And 14% of Americans lack the literary skills to understand newspaper articles or navigate instruction manuals. Those measures -- education, poverty, poor health and shorter lifespan -- have all been shown to be interconnected.

Health care is integral to our success as a country. Healthy children learn more. Healthy adults work more. A healthy population creates more prosperity for itself. And yet, while America spends more money on health care than everyone else, we get less. Over the years, as health insurance profits have risen (along with costs), Americans get less for their money. The ranks of not only the uninsured, but the underinsured are growing.

$217 million per hour, every day of every year.

Without adequate health insurance because premiums are rising much more quickly than both inflation and earnings, the number one cause of bankruptcy in America is health care costs.

Why do we put up with this? Why do we allow private insurance companies to reap ever-higher profits while fulfilling less and less of their obligations to cover our medical bills? Why do Americans continue to finance an industry that admits it puts profits before people, and is so is full of waste? As Ezra Klein puts it:

And of course, there's administration, where we pay $98 billion more than anyone else, $84 billion of it in oh-so-efficient private sector.  64% of those costs come from insurer underwriting and advertising -- in other words, we're paying more than $50 billion dollars so insurers can convince us we need care and then figure out how to deny those of us who'll actually use it.  That's some added value.

This system is broken. We deserve something better.

What if insurance companies were required to provide a standard level of care for a standard price? What if insurance companies couldn't drop you from their plans if you got sick? What if they couldn't deny you coverage if you had pre-existing conditions? And most importantly, what if there was a public health insurance plan anybody could opt into no matter what?

The distinguishing feature of America's health insurance system is its extreme privatization. While countries with public health insurance plans get more and pay less, America is forced to use its considerable wealth to pay for sub-par services.

$217 million per hour, day in and day out.

With America's education system in need of an overhaul, our roads and bridges crumbling, and the gap between our rich and poor widening, there are better things our government can be spending money on than padding pharmaceutical corporation's bottom lines, as they are doing with the advent of the new Medicare Part D laws. And with gas prices getting higher, electricity costs rising, and the dollar falling, there are better things the American people can be spending their money on than overpriced, under-performing private health care.

America was once known as a land of thrift. At the very least, let's try to be known as a land of smart consumers. We need a change. We need health care for America now!

We're going to get in in 2009, but we need your help. Please, join us!

Census Bureau’s Own Research Staff Demonstrated That Airbrushing Out Same-Sex Marriages Distorts Data

People For petition urges reversal of policy to falsify Census data

The Census Bureau reported this week that in completing the 2010 Census, it will ‘edit’ the data from same-sex couples who accurately report that they are legally married, and that it will instead re-classify them as “unmarried partners,” the same procedure used by the Bureau during the 2000 census, when no states yet recognized same-sex couples as legally married. That kind of “editing” undermines the Bureau’s mission to provide accurate and high quality data about the U.S. population, and according to a paper on the Bureau’s own website, creates a distorted picture of same-sex households.

“There are legally married same-sex couples in the United States,” said People For the American Way President Kathryn Kolbert. “It’s a fact that can’t be ‘edited’ out of existence. It’s time to stop faking the data for the sake of people who want to pretend that same-sex married couples don’t exist.”

The paper, “Unbinding the Ties: Edit Effects of Marital Status on Same Gender Couples,” was written in 1999 by two members of the Census Bureau’s Fertility and Family Statistics Branch, Population Division. The authors looked at data from the 2000 Census “dress rehearsal,” and drew the following conclusions about the effects of “editing” the responses of same-sex couples from “married” to “unmarried partners”:

“it is clear from the examination of [the] unedited data that households which are identified as ‘married couple’ same gender households are a distinct group from households which are identified as unmarried partner same gender households. By combining these households . . . we [that is, the Census Bureau] are distorting the picture for both of these groups of households.” (Emphasis added.)

And that was before there were same-sex couples recognized in any states as legally married — continuing to “edit” out married gay and lesbian couples in the next Census would create an even greater distortion.

People For the American Way has launched a petition urging the Census Bureau to reverse its policy.

MoveOn: Tell Obama To Filibuster FISA

(From MyDD by Todd Beeton)

As I wrote on Friday, Barack Obama's statement on the FISA "compromise" included this passage:

It does, however, grant retroactive immunity, and I will work in the Senate to remove this provision so that we can seek full accountability for past offenses.

Dear MoveOn member,

On Friday, House Democrats caved to the Bush administration and passed a bill giving a get-out-of-jail-free card to phone companies that helped Bush illegally spy on innocent Americans.

This Monday, the fight moves to the Senate. Senator Russ Feingold says the "deal is not a compromise; it is a capitulation." Barack Obama announced his partial support for the bill, but said, "It does, however, grant retroactive immunity, and I will work in the Senate to remove this provision so that we can seek full accountability for past offenses."

Last year, after phone calls from MoveOn members and others, Obama went so far as to vow to "support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies." We need him to honor that promise.

Can you call Senator Obama today and tell him you're counting on him to keep his word? Ask him to block any compromise that includes immunity for phone companies that helped Bush break the law.

Obama's presidential campaign: (866) 675-2008

Then, help us track our progress by clicking here:

http://pol.moveon.org/call?cp_id=758& ;tg=479

These companies helped the Bush Administration illegally spy on the emails and phone calls of innocent Americans. By giving "immunity" to these companies, all lawsuits brought against them by civil liberties groups would be thrown out of court. That means we may never find out how far Bush went in breaking the law. And once it's done, it can't be undone. That's why we need Obama to promise to block any bill that has immunity.

A week ago, Campaign Money Watch began pressuring Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to fire from his campaign three lobbyists —Charlie Black, Tom Loeffler and Peter Madigan. Their ties to brutal regimes and polluters have no place in presidential politics.

Today, we can report that our efforts have paid off. Tom Loeffler, whose firm had received more than $15 million from the Saudi Arabian monarchy and oil interests, Sign our petition today to join more than 11,000 others in telling John McCain to fire the lobbyists.

Loeffler's overdue departure came after the McCain campaign responded to pressure and began questioning everyone on staff about their lobbying backgrounds and other potential conflicts of interest.

But as promising as this sounds, it's important to remember that the man in charge of this review, Rick Davis, is himself a former lobbyist with ties to shady figures.

FROM David Sirota: Progressive States Network

Friends:

I wanted to invite you to a major event on June 18 to support the most important kind of grassroots politics. Specifically, the Progressive States Network is holding its annual Progressive Leaders Gala to honor the state leaders who are making real change all over the country. I will be joining former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle at the event, which is designed to trumpet the terrific work of progressive state leaders. You can find event details and RSVP information here:

https://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1665/event/checkOut.jsp?event_KEY=39881

As you know, I am one of the founders of the Progressive States Network, and I serve on the organization's board. We undertook this project in 2006 because we believed progressive leaders at the state level were being ignored - and because we believed that with the right kind of support, those leaders could help drive the progressive movement. The results over the last two years have proven that correct, as PSN has spearheaded campaigns on health care, wage enforcement, immigration and trade in legislatures all over the country.

The annual gala is PSN's big fundraising event - and so if you cannot attend the event, I hope you will consider contributing. For years, the conservative movement has funded ALEC - a state-based operation that has driven some of the worst right-wing legislation through our state legislatures. To counter that, PSN needs a real grassroots fundraising base.

I am attaching the details of the event at the end of this message. Again, to RSVP or make a contribution, please go here:

https://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1665/event/checkOut.jsp?event_KEY=39881

Thanks for your support on this project and on my book. Without grassroots support, these kind of efforts would be nothing.

Rock the boat,
David

It is time to determine if we are truly a nation of laws or if we have resigned ourselves to the fact that some men (and women) in control of our nation can act outside the law without consequence.

If the latter is true, we have turned our backs on the founders of our country and do not deserve the freedoms we have been granted as citizens of the United States.

Urge Your Senators to Support Fair Pay!

I just now urged my senators to support S.1843, the Fair Pay Restoration Act of 2007, to correct the Supreme Court ruling in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.

Ignoring decades of precedent under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Supreme Court's 5:4 decision in the Ledbetter case severely limits women workers' ability to sue for wage discrimination. When you read-up on this case I think you'll be appalled at their decision.

The House has already passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the companion bill to S.1843, and it is imperative that the Senate take immediate action to reverse the Supreme Court's assault on women's rights by passing the Fair Pay Restoration Act. Join me and tell your senators to support the Fair Pay Restoration Act Today!

Please: Take action now!

PETITION TO KEEP MEDICARE FAIR

Keep MedicareFair.org is a campaign from AARP to raise awareness about Congress’s plan to raise Medicare premiums to cover rising health care costs. This solution is not fair, and we want to put a stop to it before Congress votes on it in June. We are doing this by collecting 200,000 signatures on our petition to let Congress know that we all deserve a fair deal.

Medicare facts:

  • The monthly premiums Medicare beneficiaries pay have more than doubled since 2000.
  • Unless Congress passes a permanent fix to the rising costs this June, older Americans will be forced to pay even
  • higher premiums on top of their already skyrocketing out-of-pocket health care costs.
  • On average, Medicare covers only half of a beneficiary’s annual health care costs not including long term care.
  • 43 million Americans rely on Medicare every day for affordable health coverage.
  • Most people on Medicare have no other option for affordable health care coverage.

There's only one way to end the dependence of congressional and presidential candidates on big money, special interest campaign donors, and that's with comprehensive public financing.

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has refused as a presidential candidate to support legislation that meets this litmus test of serious campaign finance reform: Clean Elections-style public financing for all federal races. (1)

We need you to help us hold him accountable. Add your name to our letter urging Sen. McCain to get behind real change in Washington.

Ourletter asks that he cosponsor two bipartisan public financing bills — the Fair Elections Now Act and the Presidential Funding Act — and make their passage apriority in 2009. That's the real reform litmus test for all presidential candidates.

Senator McCain certainly has a long record supporting various reforms. But it's widely accepted that what will make the biggest difference in changing Washington is a system of comprehensive public financing. (2)

In fact, along with six others states, McCain's home state of Arizona has a strong record in running elections with comprehensive public financing. But despite his previous support for this policy in Arizona, McCain has refused to back it for Congress.

Sign ourletter by clicking here, and please forward this email on toothers.

With big money from wealthy special interests dominating politics, America needs a president who boldly promises to make this the last election cycle so dominated by big moneyed interests. Both Senators Barack Obama (D-IL) and Hillary Clinton(D-NY) have made that commitment by pledging that passing public financing would be a priority if elected. (3)

John McCain hasn't. And until he does, he's failed the reform litmus test.

Sign our letter to Senator McCain imploring him to side with voters and not the big money donors. We'll deliver this letter at a time we can make a big impact.

Then please forward this email to everyone you know.

Anti-bullying forces to descend on Capitol to get Senate to pass bill

(From Michigan Messenger)  LANSING -- Hundreds of educators, students and community members are expected to descend upon the State Capitol next week to demand the Senate pass a comprehensive bill aimed at stopping bullying in schools. The bill passed the state House a year ago, but has since languished in the Senate awaiting a hearing. The event will happen Wednesday, March 26, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Capitol.

The bill, Matt's Safe School Law, would require school districts to create and report to the state an anti-bullying policy. Some oppose the bill because it includes a list of protected categories, including sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. The bill is named for Matt Epling, an East Lansing Schools student who committed suicide as a result of harassment and bullying.

"I think if you are going to make a statement on bullying, you don't make special classes of students," said State Sen. Wayne Kuipers, R-Holland, chair of the Senate Education Committee. "Bullying is a symptom of a larger problem."

Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan

In 1776, Thomas Paine wrote: “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.”

In 1971, a courageous group of veterans exposed the criminal nature of the Vietnam War in an event called Winter Soldier. Once again, we will demand that the voices of veterans are heard.

Once again, we are fighting for the soul of our country. We will demonstrate our patriotism by speaking out with honor and integrity instead of blindly following failed policy. Winter Soldier is a difficult but essential service to our country.

Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan will feature testimony from U.S. veterans who served in those occupations, giving an accurate account of what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground.

The four-day event will bring together veterans from across the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan - and present video and photographic evidence. In addition, there will be panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and other specialists to give context to the testimony. These panels will cover everything from the history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for veterans' health benefits and support.

When: Thursday March 13 to Sunday March 16

Attendance at Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan is not open to the general public because of limited space at the event site. Members of Iraq Veterans Against the War, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, Military Families Speak Out, and Gold Star Families Speak Out will attend the panels at Winter Soldier.

To bring the testimonies to the general public and GIs all over the world we have made it possible to watch the live broadcasts online and on television, and to listen online and the radio. You can find out more about how to watch or listen here. To find a local Winter Soldier screening event or to submit a screening event go to our events map.

Will party insiders overturn your vote?

This is an unprecedented year. Thirty-seven states and U.S. territories have already voted and we don't have a clear nominee. Senators Clinton and Obama are in a delegate race to the nomination.

There are a lot of ways that delegates get assigned to a specific candidate, but almost all of the allocated delegates are directly tied and bound by the actual votes in each primary or caucus -- all of them that is, except super-delegates.

Super-delegates are a contingent of almost 900 elected officials, party insiders, and current DNC members and they aren't required to follow the voters. In fact, after every Democrat has voted and the last allocated delegates are assigned, super-delegates have the power to overturn the popular vote and crown a different winner.

That's right, if super-delegates don't like who you choose to be our nominee, they can overturn your vote. We can't let that happen. Our nominee must be chosen by Democratic voters, not by back room deals of the party elite. Sign our petition now to let the voters decide:

www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/VotersDecide

We must respect the 20 million Democrats who have already voted and the millions more who will vote before the convention. It's up to us to make sure the almost 900 super-delegates do the right thing.

Dear Mike,

Earlier this week, Republican presidential candidates did everything possible in their debate in California to prove they were the same as President Ronald Reagan. When this election has so clearly become about change and the future, the Republicans were making a case about the status quo and the past.

Nearly 8,500 people have already signed a petition asking the Republican presidential nominees to support real change in how Washington works by backing full public financing of elections.

It’s time for real change in Washington.

The remaining Democratic candidates have pledged to support public financing. That might be a lasting legacy of John Edwards’ candidacy. But will the Republicans come around?

Once we collect signatures for this petition, we’ll fax the Republican presidential candidates on Monday – before Super Tuesday, February 5th – to urge them to support full public financing of elections.

From big campaign contributions to the influence of bundlers and lobbyists, the role of campaign cash in our electoral process has gotten worse. The Republicans are pretending the problem doesn’t exist. They need to hear from people likeyou that you demand real change in Washington.

Please sign our petition today. Let’s make sure they hear us!

We need to end the status quo in Washington. Thanks for your help.

FISA Action in Senate Today Action Time Now

Dear John,

Your help is urgently needed to help defeat a Senate bill to revise FISA, the warrantless wiretapping surveillance program and provide sweeping, retroactive immunity, requested by the president, for telecommunications companies that participated in this program.

President Bush is insisting that the phone companies need this immunity or we would be at risk of future terrorist attacks. I remain unconvinced that this is the case and the House passed bill did not include this measure. As I mentioned in previous emails about this issue, if the president was serious about keeping us safe from terrorism while advocating for this immunity, he would long ago have provided us with the necessary documents for Congress to review this program.

In the Senate today, the pressure is on from Republicans to end debate and force a vote to grant phone companies retroactive immunity before any details of their activities is revealed.

Your help is needed now. Contact your Senators today and ask them to vote no on today's FISA cloture vote. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has an action page below that can help you reach your Senator now.

https://secure.eff.org/site/Advocacy?alertId=357&pg=makeACall

Even after today, further efforts may be needed to make sure that a bad bill does not pass the Senate.

Thank you for your help today and your continued support for a better democracy.

Consumers Union

Dear Gary,

Wouldn’t it be nice to have $2.8 billion “extra” cash in the bank, and make over $1 million a day in profit? Sure it would; just ask Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

Michigan residents are the ones paying for it. For the past few years, Blue Cross has raised its health insurance rates for individuals nearly 80% in Michigan.

But the billions aren’t enough for Blue Cross. Now they are pushing for legislation that would enable them to triple their profit margins at the expense of Michigan residents and allow for:

  • Even higher premiums for seniors and Michigan’s sickest people
  • Charging more to consumers based on where they live
  • No public or state oversight of any further Blue Cross rate increases
  • Excluding people with pre-existing conditions for one year

You can help stop this plan in its tracks. Send a message right now and urge your Senator to stand up to Blue Cross greed and VOTE NO.

Michigan needs real health reform, not a scheme to pad the pockets of insurance companies while charging Michigan residents even more.

Tell your Senator to protect the health care needs of Michigan’s seniors, patients and consumers and to strongly OPPOSE the Blue Cross plan.

Multiply your message; please forward this email to all your friends and family in Michigan.

Thank you,

RE: ENERGY BILL

CAPAF Logo

Dear Mike,

Thanks to your help, the House passed a strong energy bill last week that goes a long way toward reducing oil consumption. The Senate could vote as early as tomorrow, December 13th. Now is the time to ask your senator to vote for the bill too.

We need your senator to vote for the bill, which includes much better fuel economy and energy efficiency standards, eliminates big oil tax loopholes, and provides incentives for renewable electricity including solar and wind power. Your voice must be heard loud and clear if we are going to get a strong bill to the president.

So click here to tell your Senator to vote for the energy bill.

With your help, we can reduce oil consumption, spur economic growth, and fight global warming. So send the letter we have provided for you, or better still, rewrite the letter and the subject line in your own words to make it even more effective.

Thanks,
Alan and the CAPAF advocacy team

Dear Mike,

Take Action Now

People across the country are building a wall to stop the FCC's plan to let Big Media swallow up more local stations.

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin refuses to listen to the public, but Congress is starting to pay attention. This week, the House announced a formal investigation into the way the FCC conducts business. And yesterday, during a House oversight hearing, Congress scolded the FCC for a "short-circuited decision-making process" and "abuse of power."

Our campaign is gaining momentum, but we need you to join us in our stand against Big Media.

Ask Your Senators to Co-Sponsor the Media Ownership Act

Chairman Martin hopes you aren't paying attention. He wants to vote on his proposal to let Big Media get even bigger on Dec. 18. If you think we need more local, diverse, and democratic media, now is the time to act.

Congress is taking action, but we need to show that this isn't just another inside-the-Beltway issue. Too much is at stake, and they need to see the faces of the millions of Americans who are fed up with another massive giveaway to Big Media.

Send Bush an early holiday gift, courtesy of CCR.

The President needs to be reminded that he swore an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States-his administration has been systematically destroying the Constitution since he took office.

With your help, CCR will flood the Oval Office with copies of the Constitution this holiday season. If you sign this letter, CCR will send it along with a copy of the Constitution to the White House as a seasonal reminder that the Constitution needs to be upheld ; not destroyed.

We have already met our first goal of 25,000 signatures, let's try to send President Bush more than 50,000 copies of the Constitution by January 2008

ENERGY BILL -- TELL CONGRESS TO ACT!

Dear Mike,

Last week, the price of oil hit a near record high $99 per barrel, and with it, gasoline rose to an average of $3.09 per gallon. With winter coming, heating prices could rise too. This is a real threat to us all.

Congress needs to act now to pass a comprehensive energy bill to reduce these threats.

Senate and House leaders are now debating how to increase fuel economy and reduce oil use. If Congress crafts a final energy bill with the best provisions from earlier measures, it would reduce U.S. oil use by at least 2.5 million barrels per day by 2016. That's a good thing.

But big oil and other special interests are conniving to block these measures. That's a bad thing.

So write Congress today and tell them to pass a good energy bill that:

  • Includes more efficient motor vehicle fuel economy (CAFE) standards to reduce oil use by 1.2 million barrels per day by 2020, which is slightly less than the amount of oil the U.S. currently imports from Venezuela
  • Includes the House renewable fuels provision, which would stop oil companies from making it difficult it sell cleaner flex fuels such as E-85 and create incentives for service stations to add flex fuels to their other gasoline offerings
  • Includes the House renewable electricity provision, which would save consumers more than $200 billion in reduced energy costs
  • Includes energy efficiency provisions from both bills that could reduce electricity used for lighting by 65 percent and energy used for buildings by 50 percent by 2020

Congress needs to hear from you, loud and clear.  You can send the email we have written for you or, better still, personalize it for more impact.

Thanks for you help,

Alan and the CAPAF advocacy team

Tell Senate Majority Leader Bishop to Lead by Example

  (From MichiganLiberal.Com  by: JWinston70 Sun Oct 28, 2007 at 22:41:37 PM EDT)

End Free Lifetime Health Care and Cut Legislator's Pay Now!

It's urgent that you act today!  The State Senate is preparing to cut another $440 million from health care, environmental protection and education - even as Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop protects legislator's free lifetime health care and pay.  Tell Senator Bishop and the legislature that they should lead by example and share in the sacrifice being asked of Michigan families in these tough times.  Tell them to act on legislation sitting in the Senate that would cut legislator's pay by 5% (HCR 26) and to end their free lifetime health care (HB 4580).  Tell them to do this before any other cuts to health care, education and other vital services were made.  Please send Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop a message right now.  Email Bishop at SenMBishop@senate.michigan.gov  or call him at: 517-373-2417.  Tell him it is wrong to ask the people of Michigan to make further sacrifices in health care, environmental protection and education without a sacrifice from legislators.  Tell him to cut legislator's pay by 5% and end their free life time health care before any additional cuts are made.  Tell him to lead by example and share in the sacrifice being asked of Michigan families.

Happy Birthday to the Clean Water Act

(From the Sierra Club) It’s hard to believe that before passage of the Clean Water Act -- 35 years ago this Thursday -- many cities and industries dumped untreated wastewater and pollutants directly into rivers and lakes. Widely considered to be one of the nation's most successful environmental laws, the Clean Water Act has been responsible for significant improvements in the quality of our lakes and rivers -- today almost two-thirds are considered safe for swimming, from only about a third in 1972. But that still leaves lots of waterways to clean up.

Ask your Representative to support the Clean Water Restoration Act.

SCHIP VETO OVERRIDE

Yesterday, President Bush vetoed a children's health care bill that would help states pay for millions of kids—mostly poor—to see a doctor when they're sick. Not only do 72% of Americans support this bill, but 61% of Republicans do!

(From Blogging for Michigan) The Michigan League for Human Services issued a statement, expressing its deep disappointment on President Bush's veto of the SCHIP program.

SCHIP is known as MIChild in Michigan, and provides health care for 55,000 Michigan children each month.  The Granholm Leadership Fund blogged about SCHIP earlier this year:

There are still about 160,000 children without insurance in Michigan and most of them (about 66%) are eligible for coverage under MiChild. In order to ensure that those working families still without healthcare insurance are taken care of, congress has proposed an expansion of the SCHIP program which is set to expire at the end of September.

This expansion is what Bush vetoed.

The League issued the following statement:

MIChild has been a successful program that helps 34,000 low-income children each month make regular visits to the doctor and get timely treatment. In Michigan, the program also provides limited health care services for 62,000 extremely poor adults living on incomes of about $3,500 a year or less.

Since MIChild's inception in 1998, about 155,000 children have received comprehensive coverage through the program. Additionally, MIChild applications have uncovered hundreds of thousands of previously uninsured children whose family incomes qualified them for Medicaid.

The Michigan League for Human Services is "a statewide citizens’ non-profit organization dedicated to education, research and advocacy for the benefit of low income and other vulnerable citizens in the state of Michigan."  You can visit MLHS on the web at www.milhs.org, and read their press releases and other news information by following the "News Room" link in the left navigation menu.

==============

Congress will try to override Bush's veto with a two-thirds majority vote. The Senate already passed the bill with a bipartisan, veto-proof majority—but we still need several more votes in the House. You can help make this happen. Representative Upton has indicated that he will vote to override Bush’s veto.

However, it would not hurt to bolster his support. Please call Congressman Upton and express your concerns about the veto of this important legislation.

 3) From an e-mail alert from Jennifer Granholm:

Today is one of the moments that will definitively and dramatically define what kind of future we create for Michigan. Right now, I need your help to make sure the direction we set for our state is one that provides opportunity for our citizens.

This morning (9-14-07), the Michigan House of Representatives is voting on budget bills that are steps towards resolving our fiscal crisis. The bills are part of a comprehensive solution that includes sensible cuts, significant reforms and new revenues. With just 16 days left until the constitutional deadline, the time for hesitation is past. The Legislature must act now on a comprehensive solution.

Please click here to find the phone number for your representative and CALL THEM RIGHT NOW.

Earlier this week, the Senate Republicans unveiled a list of devastating cuts that would hurt Michigan citizens. If these bills are not passed out of the House, the Senate is threatening to move forward with these cuts on Monday.

Since taking office, I have reconciled over $4 billion in budget deficits and have cut more out of state government than any Governor before me. But now, instead of slashing education, health care and public safety, we must secure our future with a comprehensive approach that includes sensible cuts, significant reforms, and new revenues. Bi-partisan leaders across our state and experts on Wall Street agree that we need a comprehensive solution.

Go to JenniferGranholm.com/BudgetCall right now to find your representative and give them a call.

For months, Michigan's fiscal crisis has spiraled out of control while the legislature failed to pass a comprehensive budget solution. Now, with just 16 days left until the start of the next fiscal year, failure to pass these budget bills is simply not an option.

Call your state representative right now and tell them to support a comprehensive solution.

Together, we can guarantee strong schools for our kids, affordable college and worker training, greater access to health care, and police and firefighters on the streets we can secure a brighter future for Michigan. Please forward this email and make a phone call right now.

Sincerely,

Jennifer M. Granholm
Governor of Michigan

Should Vice President Cheney be Impeached?

From Bob Conway (Niles):

Good morning. I just sent a personal message using the easy one-click form below to make policy change happen now. I hope you will join me!

http://www.actspeak.com/cheney_impeachment.php

Should Vice President Cheney be Impeached?

On April 24, 2007, U.S. House Representative Dennis Kucinich introduced H.Res. 333, calling for articles of impeachment to be sent to the U.S Senate with regards to Vice President Richard B. Cheney.

If you believe that Vice President Cheney should be impeached, then vote "Yes".

The grounds of the proposed impeachment are that the Vice President 1) fabricated a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, 2) purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda, and 3) has threatened aggression against the Republic of Iran absent any real threat to the United States, all in detriment to the national interest of the United States.

http://www.actspeak.com/cheney_impeachment.php

Even if you've responded to this appeal already within the past few weeks or months, it doesn't hurt to remind your U.S. Representative that while this may not be on Nancy Pelosi's table, it's still on ours.

Thank you.

Bob C.
