A New Low for Wal-Mart: Telling Workers How to Vote According to The Wall Street Journal, Wal-Mart is so intimidated by the very possibility of a unionized workforce that its supervisors have been holding mandatory meetings essentially telling employees to vote against Democrats and Sen. Barack Obama this November. Wal-Mart is taking this outrageous step because the Democrats and Sen. Obama have committed to pass the Employee Free Choice Act to restore workers’ freedom to form unions and bargain for fair wages, health care, decent working conditions and a real voice on the job. All American workers have the right to freely decide whom to vote for independent of employer pressure and intimidation. Tell Wal-Mart to stop intimidating workers TODAY! |

POSTED 7/19/08 AT THE REQUEST OF MIKE Census Bureau’s Own Research Staff Demonstrated That Airbrushing Out Same-Sex Marriages Distorts Data People For petition urges reversal of policy to falsify Census data The Census Bureau reported this week that in completing the 2010 Census, it will ‘edit’ the data from same-sex couples who accurately report that they are legally married, and that it will instead re-classify them as “unmarried partners,” the same procedure used by the Bureau during the 2000 census, when no states yet recognized same-sex couples as legally married. That kind of “editing” undermines the Bureau’s mission to provide accurate and high quality data about the U.S. population, and according to a paper on the Bureau’s own website, creates a distorted picture of same-sex households. “There are legally married same-sex couples in the United States,” said People For the American Way President Kathryn Kolbert. “It’s a fact that can’t be ‘edited’ out of existence. It’s time to stop faking the data for the sake of people who want to pretend that same-sex married couples don’t exist.” The paper, “Unbinding the Ties: Edit Effects of Marital Status on Same Gender Couples,” was written in 1999 by two members of the Census Bureau’s Fertility and Family Statistics Branch, Population Division. The authors looked at data from the 2000 Census “dress rehearsal,” and drew the following conclusions about the effects of “editing” the responses of same-sex couples from “married” to “unmarried partners”: “it is clear from the examination of [the] unedited data that households which are identified as ‘married couple’ same gender households are a distinct group from households which are identified as unmarried partner same gender households. By combining these households . . . we [that is, the Census Bureau] are distorting the picture for both of these groups of households.” (Emphasis added.) And that was before there were same-sex couples recognized in any states as legally married — continuing to “edit” out married gay and lesbian couples in the next Census would create an even greater distortion. People For the American Way has launched a petition urging the Census Bureau to reverse its policy. |

MoveOn: Tell Obama To Filibuster FISA
(From MyDD by Todd Beeton) As I wrote on Friday, Barack Obama's statement on the FISA "compromise" included this passage: It does, however, grant retroactive immunity, and I will work in the Senate to remove this provision so that we can seek full accountability for past offenses.
Dear MoveOn member, On Friday, House Democrats caved to the Bush administration and passed a bill giving a get-out-of-jail-free card to phone companies that helped Bush illegally spy on innocent Americans. This Monday, the fight moves to the Senate. Senator Russ Feingold says the "deal is not a compromise; it is a capitulation." Barack Obama announced his partial support for the bill, but said, "It does, however, grant retroactive immunity, and I will work in the Senate to remove this provision so that we can seek full accountability for past offenses." Last year, after phone calls from MoveOn members and others, Obama went so far as to vow to "support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies." We need him to honor that promise. Can you call Senator Obama today and tell him you're counting on him to keep his word? Ask him to block any compromise that includes immunity for phone companies that helped Bush break the law. Obama's presidential campaign: (866) 675-2008 Then, help us track our progress by clicking here: http://pol.moveon.org/call?cp_id=758& ;tg=479 These companies helped the Bush Administration illegally spy on the emails and phone calls of innocent Americans. By giving "immunity" to these companies, all lawsuits brought against them by civil liberties groups would be thrown out of court. That means we may never find out how far Bush went in breaking the law. And once it's done, it can't be undone. That's why we need Obama to promise to block any bill that has immunity. |

A week ago, Campaign Money Watch began pressuring Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to fire from his campaign three lobbyists —Charlie Black, Tom Loeffler and Peter Madigan. Their ties to brutal regimes and polluters have no place in presidential politics. Today, we can report that our efforts have paid off. Tom Loeffler, whose firm had received more than $15 million from the Saudi Arabian monarchy and oil interests, Sign our petition today to join more than 11,000 others in telling John McCain to fire the lobbyists. Loeffler's overdue departure came after the McCain campaign responded to pressure and began questioning everyone on staff about their lobbying backgrounds and other potential conflicts of interest. But as promising as this sounds, it's important to remember that the man in charge of this review, Rick Davis, is himself a former lobbyist with ties to shady figures. The only way to keep the McCain campaign honest is to keep the pressure on them — help us by By signing our petition today, you can help us keep the pressure on McCain to fire Black and Madigan and help end the stranglehold lobbyists have on his campaign. POSTED 5/22/08 at the request of Mike FROM David Sirota: Progressive States Network Friends: I wanted to invite you to a major event on June 18 to support the most important kind of grassroots politics. Specifically, the Progressive States Network is holding its annual Progressive Leaders Gala to honor the state leaders who are making real change all over the country. I will be joining former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle at the event, which is designed to trumpet the terrific work of progressive state leaders. You can find event details and RSVP information here: https://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1665/event/checkOut.jsp?event_KEY=39881 As you know, I am
one of the founders of the Progressive States Network, and I serve
on the organization's board. We undertook this project in 2006
because we believed progressive leaders at the state level were
being ignored - and because we believed that with the right kind of
support, those leaders could help drive the progressive movement.
The results over the last two years have proven that correct, as PSN
has spearheaded campaigns on health care, wage enforcement,
immigration and trade in legislatures all over the country. https://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1665/event/checkOut.jsp?event_KEY=39881 Thanks for your
support on this project and on my book. Without grassroots support,
these kind of efforts would be nothing. |

Tell House Judiciary
Chairman John Conyers to subpoena John Ashcroft and John Yoo so that
they can explain their role It is time to determine if we are truly a nation of laws or if we have resigned ourselves to the fact that some men (and women) in control of our nation can act outside the law without consequence. If the latter is true, we have turned our backs on the founders of our country and do not deserve the freedoms we have been granted as citizens of the United States. Former Attorney General John Ashcroft and former Justice Department official John Yoo must explain to the American people how it came to pass that the Department not only gave the green light to torture, but also prevented the FBI from taking action against the CIA when it was aware of torture taking place. Please fill in the information below and click on "Send my message" to urge House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers to subpoena Ashcroft and Yoo so that they will be forced to appear before the committee and explain their role in this travesty. http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/2165/t/1027/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=24355 *Among other issues, this group supports fully restoring the right to challenge the legality of one's detention, or habeas corpus, and the right of detained suspects to be charged and brought to trial; prohibiting torture and all cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment; prohibiting the use of secret evidence; and prohibiting the detention of anyone, including U.S. citizens, as an "enemy combatant" outside the battlefield, and on the President's say-so alone. Some oppose the bill because it includes a list of protected categories, including sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. The bill is named for Matt Epling, an East Lansing Schools student who committed suicide as a result of harassment and bullying. "I think if you are going to make a statement on bullying, you don't make special classes of students," said State Sen. Wayne Kuipers, R-Holland, chair of the Senate Education Committee. In 1971, a courageous group of veterans exposed the criminal nature of the Vietnam War in an event called Winter Soldier. Once again, we will demand that the voices of veterans are heard. Once again, we are fighting for the soul of our country. We will demonstrate our patriotism by speaking out with honor and integrity instead of blindly following failed policy. Winter Soldier is a difficult but essential service to our country. Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan will feature testimony from U.S. veterans who served in those occupations, giving an accurate account of what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground. The four-day event will bring together veterans from across the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan - and present video and photographic evidence. In addition, there will be panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and other specialists to give context to the testimony. These panels will cover everything from the history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for veterans' health benefits and support. When: Thursday March 13 to Sunday March 16 Attendance at Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan is not open to the general public because of limited space at the event site. Members of Iraq Veterans Against the War, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, Military Families Speak Out, and Gold Star Families Speak Out will attend the panels at Winter Soldier. POSTED 2/14/08 AT THE REQUEST OF MIKEWill party insiders overturn your vote?
There are a lot of ways that delegates get assigned to a specific candidate, but almost all of the allocated delegates are directly tied and bound by the actual votes in each primary or caucus -- all of them that is, except super-delegates. Super-delegates are a contingent of almost 900 elected officials, party insiders, and current DNC members and they aren't required to follow the voters. In fact, after every Democrat has voted and the last allocated delegates are assigned, super-delegates have the power to overturn the popular vote and crown a different winner. That's right, if super-delegates don't like who you choose to be our nominee, they can overturn your vote. We can't let that happen. Our nominee must be chosen by Democratic voters, not by back room deals of the party elite. Sign our petition now to let the voters decide: www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/VotersDecide We must respect the 20 million Democrats who have already voted and the millions more who will vote before the convention. Dear Mike,
Nearly 8,500 people have already signed a petition asking the Republican presidential nominees to support real change in how Washington works by backing full public financing of elections. It’s time for real change in Washington. The remaining Democratic candidates have pledged to support public financing. That might be a lasting legacy of John Edwards’ candidacy. But will the Republicans come around? Once we collect signatures for this petition, we’ll fax the Republican presidential candidates on Monday – before Super Tuesday, February 5th – to urge them to support full public financing of elections. From big campaign contributions to the influence of bundlers and lobbyists, the role of campaign cash in our electoral process has gotten worse. The Republicans are pretending the problem doesn’t exist. They need to hear from people likeyou that you demand real change in Washington. Please sign our petition today. Let’s make sure they hear us! We need to end the status quo in Washington. Thanks for your help.

FISA Action in Senate Today Action Time Now Dear John, Your help is urgently needed to help defeat a Senate bill to revise FISA, the warrantless wiretapping surveillance program and provide sweeping, retroactive immunity, requested by the president, for telecommunications companies that participated in this program. President Bush is insisting that the phone companies need this immunity or we would be at risk of future terrorist attacks. I remain unconvinced that this is the case and the House passed bill did not include this measure. As I mentioned in previous emails about this issue, if the president was serious about keeping us safe from terrorism while advocating for this immunity, he would long ago have provided us with the necessary documents for Congress to review this program. In the Senate today, the pressure is on from Republicans to end debate and force a vote to grant phone companies retroactive immunity before any details of their activities is revealed. Your help is needed now. Contact your Senators today and ask them to vote no on today's FISA cloture vote. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has an action page below that can help you reach your Senator now. https://secure.eff.org/site/Advocacy?alertId=357&pg=makeACall Even after today, further efforts may be needed to make sure that a bad bill does not pass the Senate. Pledge to unite together as a party and support our nominee When Democrats take back the White House this year, it will mark the end of the disastrous George W. Bush era. Republicans lost 36 seats in 2006 because of the failed Republican policies abroad and here at home. The Republican presidential candidates did not learn from the GOP's "thumpin'" in 2006. Instead, they are recycling tired gimmicks and hoping for a new result. All the while, offering more of the same. But, with your help, we will not let that happen. Dear Mike, Thanks to your help, the House passed a strong energy bill last week that goes a long way toward reducing oil consumption. The Senate could vote as early as tomorrow, December 13th. Now is the time to ask your senator to vote for the bill too. We need your senator to vote for the bill, which includes much better fuel economy and energy efficiency standards, eliminates big oil tax loopholes, and provides incentives for renewable electricity including solar and wind power. Your voice must be heard loud and clear if we are going to get a strong bill to the president. So click here to tell your Senator to vote for the energy bill. With your help, we can reduce oil consumption, spur economic growth, and fight global warming. So send the letter we have provided for you, or better still, rewrite the letter and the subject line in your own words to make it even more effective.

POSTED 12/10/07 AT THE REQUEST OF MIKE Dear Mike, People across the country are building a wall to stop the FCC's plan to let Big Media swallow up more local stations. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin refuses to listen to the public, but Congress is starting to pay attention. This week, the House announced a formal investigation into the way the FCC conducts business. And yesterday, during a House oversight hearing, Congress scolded the FCC for a "short-circuited decision-making process" and "abuse of power." Our campaign is gaining momentum, but we need you to join us in our stand against Big Media. Ask Your Senators to Co-Sponsor the Media Ownership Act Chairman Martin hopes you aren't paying attention. He wants to vote on his proposal to let Big Media get even bigger on Dec. 18. If you think we need more local, diverse, and democratic media, now is the time to act. Congress is taking action, but we need to show that this isn't just another inside-the-Beltway issue. Too much is at stake, and they need to see the faces of the millions of Americans who are fed up with another massive giveaway to Big Media.

Dear Mike, Last week, the price of oil hit a near record high $99 per barrel, and with it, gasoline rose to an average of $3.09 per gallon. With winter coming, heating prices could rise too. This is a real threat to us all. Congress needs to act now to pass a comprehensive energy bill to reduce these threats. Senate and House leaders are now debating how to increase fuel economy and reduce oil use. If Congress crafts a final energy bill with the best provisions from earlier measures, it would reduce U.S. oil use by at least 2.5 million barrels per day by 2016. That's a good thing. But big oil and other special interests are conniving to block these measures. That's a bad thing. So write Congress today and tell them to pass a good energy bill that:
